Good Evening! It's 7:37 on a Tuesday night, and I'm here thinking about philosophical dilemmas in kickboxing instruction 😭. Anyway, let's carry on!
Why teach a specific kickboxing ruleset?
The easy answer is why not? The more defined one: If you want to compete, which I will never dissuade a club member from doing, you need to learn how to memorize, process, and plan around a ruleset. For example, some organizations bar you from using a standing hammerfist. After discussing with peers in the area, I am learning that this is mostly relegated to MMA rules. This highlights the importance of learning a ruleset, and practicing within the appropriate parameters. By no means does this signify that you shouldn't experiment and try new methods in striking. It's just a reminder that you have to be aware of rules in kickboxing and that there are various rulesets. This year, at the school that I teach at, we are operating in new rulesets for every quarter.
Our ruleset schedule for the 2025-26 school year will look like this:
Quarter 1: Glory Kickboxing
Quarter 2: K1 Kickboxing
Quarter 3: IKF
Quarter 4: Karate Combat/ONE FC/Misc
I should also note that I am not positing that one ruleset is better than the other, but rather that the emphasis should be on you challenging yourself to learn about different organizations and how they operate. This may inform which direction you want to go in with your striking. For some, it may dissuade you from competing altogether. Both are okay! You can just train to train. You can also figure out what your goal is down the road. Check out the links above. Shoot me an email if you'd like sharing which ruleset jumps out at you, and why! :D

Happy to announce that Paper City Kickboxing will be adding a few new sections to the website. The first of which is a film analysis section. I will be analyzing fights of up and coming fighters. Rather than over saturating the web with material on the better known fighters, I will be focusing on some up and coming stars you should keep an eye on and highlight their strengths and weaknesses.
It gives me great pleasure to share there will be some interviews as well. Our first "Nebula" will be Malcom Wellmaker of Augusta, Georgia. Fighting at Bantamweight, this kid is about to change the 135 lb division. Logically bringing us to our Nebula section! A Nebula is a mass of space matter that eventually becomes a star. Each month, I will do an in depth literary highlight of these fighters. Again, our first will be Malcolm Wellmaker.
We will also have a mobility section, an ambassador section, and a student spotlight section. Will be working on these throughout the week.
My VWSKB students will also have a separate section where they can access tutorials.
